What printer cartridges does the Hewlett Packard Deskjet 2542 use?

The HP Deskjet 2542 use IJT Direct branded HP 301 cartridges which has a black and tri colour cartridge which are available in a standard 301 and high capacity 301XL. Our IJT-branded cartridges are available in the high capacity. The standard black can print up to 190 pages and the tri colour up to 165 pages where as the high capacity black can print up to 480 pages and the tri colour up to 330 pages. This is based on 5% coverage of an A4 page.

Our in-house printer experts here at IJT Direct think the HP Deskjet 2542 is a great basic multifunction inkjet printer with 3 in 1 functionality, low cost and wireless connectivity. All this makes it a perfect home printer for occasional use. As well as wireless connectivity the HP 2542 is compatible with Apple AirPrint which allows printing directly from supported mobile devices.

Our thoughts on Design

The Deskjet 2542 comes in white with a rear loading paper tray capable of holding up to 50 sheets of A4 paper and a front facing output tray which has a capacity of 30 sheets, both of these can be can be folded away therefore giving the printer an even small footprint. The input paper tray can also support photo paper, envelopes and index cards.

Main Printer Advantage

For a printer of the price the Deskjet 2542 has surprisingly fast printing speeds. In draft mode it can print as fast as 20 pages per minute in mono and 16 pages per minutes in colour. As well as fast print speeds the HP 2542 can copy up to 4.5 copies per minute and scan at resolutions up to 1200 x 1200ppi. Thanks to the wireless and mobile printing compatibility you can print from a range of devices with a resolution up to 4800 x 1200dpi.

Main Printer Disadvantages

Despite its many features the HP Deskjet 2542 is missing an automatic document feeder which is very useful for saving time when scanning multi-page jobs. Also both the input and output trays have low capacities so the media will have to be replaced quite often, especially when doing large print jobs. Another drawback to the HP Deskjet 2542 is that it is only capable of mobile printing for Apple devices through Apple AirPrint, it is does not support the HP ePrint app which allows printing from a wider range of devices.

Running costs - Are the inks good value for money?

Overall our in-house printer experts believe Deskjet 2542 won’t break the bank despite having only a 2 ink system of a black and tri-colour cartridge.
