What printer cartridges does the Hewlett Packard Envy 4502 e-All-in-One use?

The HP Envy 4502 uses the HP 301 ink cartridges. There are standard and high capacities available with IJT Direct’s branded inks coming in the high capacity known as 301XL. The 301 black can print up to 170 pages and the colour up to 150 pages, whereas the high capacity black can print up to 430 pages and the colour up to 300 pages. These numbers are based on 5% coverage of an A4 page.

Our thoughts on Design

The Envy 4502 has a stylish black case with a small LCD screen and control panel with a set of buttons for navigating through the menus and printer features. There is a front feeding paper tray which can hold up to 50 sheets of plain A4 paper and a 20 sheet capacity output tray. The HP Envy 4502 has a flatbed scanner and a relatively small footprint of 445mmx334mmx120mm (WxDxH) contributing to a weight of 5.5kg.

Main Printer Advantages

The all-in-one Envy 4502 has the ability to automatically duplex print, saving paper and speeding up long multipage print jobs. The copier can be used to enlarge or shrink copies from an original document and can produce a maximum of 50 copies. Additionally the Envy 4502 has many compatible media types including envelopes up to 90gsm and Photo paper with a maximum thickness of 250gsm.

Main Printer Disadvantages

The speed of the Envy 4502 can be limiting even to a home user, the speed of colour printing is 5.2 prints per minute while the photo printing speeds are even slower taking 27 minutes to print just 6 borderless postcard prints. The Envy 4502 has no ADF feature which would speed up any multi-page copying and scanning jobs. A final negative of the HP Envy 4502 is the 2 ink colour system which can greatly increase the cost of running your printer.

Running costs - Are the inks good value for money?

As mentioned above, we think the HP Envy 4502 can be quite expensive to run. The 2 ink system means that you have to replace the whole tri-colour cartridge when you run out of any one of the colours. To reduce these costs you should use the high capacity cartridges but if choosing original HP inks your running costs could soon mount up.
