The Brother MFC J491DW takes IJT branded LC3211 and LC3213 cartridges as a 4 ink system. Each set has 4 ink colours; Black, Cyan, Magenta and yellow. Our recycled inkjets are available in both the standard capacity LC3211 and high capacity LC3213 inks. Each LC3211 cartridge can print up to 200 pages whereas the higher capacity LC3213 cartridges can each print up to 400 pages. This is based on 5% coverage on an A4 page.

As well as the print, scan copy and fax functions the compact MFC-J491DW has excellent print quality, fast printing speeds and a range of additional features not to be found in other multifunction inkjets of this budget.

Our thoughts on Design

The Brother MFC J491DW comes in black, there is a tilted front facing control panel with a 4.5cm LCD screen and set of buttons for controlling print jobs. For paper handling there is a 100 sheet capacity input tray and an output tray capable of holding up to 50 sheets of a4 paper. In addition to these trays there is a 20 sheet capacity automatic document feeder which can be folded away when not in use, reducing the overall size of the printer. The MFCJ491DW has dimensions of 400 x 341 x 172 mm (WxDxH) and weighs less than 10kg, suitable for most office spaces.

Main Printer Advantages

The presence of an ADF is a great feature of this machine it means you can leave the printer to scan multipage documents with no user input; this is also the case with the automatic duplex feature which not only saves paper but makes producing double sided prints effortless. As well as being wireless the Brother MFC-J491DW supports a range of mobile printing applications including Google Cloud Print, Apple AirPrint and Brother iPrint.

Main Printer Disadvantages

Possible down sides to the Brother MFC-J491DW are the paper handling, both the input and output trays have quite low capacities and the monthly recommended duty cycle is just 1000 pages, too low for most offices. Another disappointing feature of the MFC-J491DW is the control panel; it is lacking any touch screen feature, has a relatively small display and features a lot of buttons which crowd the panel.

Running costs - Are the inks good value for money?
