Artis 3D Pen with Multiple Speed Settings - Green, Blue, Yellow Filaments Included

I wasn't sure if this was going to be suitable for my granddaughter, she is a bit younger than the recommended age for this device, but she took to it like a duck to water, and was very quickly through the somewhat meagre supply of filament that comes with the pen. Luckily, as an avid 3d printerist I had some PLA 1.75mm stock, so we were able to plough on, and she loved it, very quickly rattled out some Christmas tree decorations. I now have to get a lot more filament, in a lot more colours! Wonderful tool for 'crafty' kids and adults, it will beinteresting to see how long the heating element and drive mechanism last, but at this price, getting another, or several, will be a no-brainer. Recommend using a cutting mat to protect your table, and a sheet of toughened glass to trace over any drawings, the material will stick well enough to draw, but will peel off easily when finished. We thought the stand was a bit pathetic too, nowhere near wide enough to stop it falling over with the pen, and its fairly stiff cable, in place. Will print a more functional stand for her on one of my other printers! Overall, fantastic device! And now she is eying up my Creality printers!

I bought this on impulse as I've recently bought a 3d printer. This uses the same 1.75mm PLA filament, so I wondered how well it works. From a purely technical point of view it's great. it heats up quite quickly and the filament is extruded quickly (a bit too quickly for real control unless you select the slowest of the three speeds. As they suggest, you really need a template to follow, and a VERY steady hand. It's a good idea to put the template under a sheet of glass (minimum 3mm, ideally toughened. The extruded filament should stick well to glass while you work, and the finished piece should lift off easily. It's not really suitable for younger children, but older children will enjoy using it (With adult supervision as the tip gets very hot (180 C up to about 240C - oven heat!).
