Our Expert review of the Summit Prolite 3W COB Head Torch

What would you use it for?

Just like a bog standard torch, you’d use a head torch when a bit of extra light helps you stay safe, comfortable and makes life a lot easier. Using the Summit Prolite 3W COB 200 lumen head torch makes this even easier because both hands are freed up.

What’s good about it?

Its lightweight minimal design and adjustable brightness head lamp. The strap is also comfortable to wear and adjustable. Made of strong plastics, it can put up with some rough treatment and has 200 lumens of lighting power with 3 adjustable light modes, though really we found ourselves on using 2, which we got excellent beam distance. The IP54 rating also means you can confidently wear it during most different types of weather.

Are there any drawbacks?

Unlike the Summit StormForce T6, the Prolite takes AAA batteries, which aren’t rechargeable by default. We did get around 6-7 hours of use before finding that batteries were starting to go, which isn’t far off what Summit claim this head torch is capable of. The nuisance is having to take more batteries with you though saving money in the long run we would suggest using rechargeable AAA batteries.

Are there alternative products available?

As you can imagine a simple Google search for head torches brings up thousands of results across a broad spectrum of designs for a huge price range.

    Better than expected

Better than a torch when you are assembling a multicomponent item

    Really useful and safe

I bought this for looking into the loft, and it's excellent. Much safer than carrying a torch. I will also use it when walking in the dark.

    HEADLIGHT TORCH

Comfortable to wear and enables work in dark places where space is an issue. The light is bright, and it does what was described. Would recommend this product

    Ideal for my boat!

Does what it says 'on the tin'. Light and comfortable to wear. Leaves your hands free for those jobs in the dark, especially on board the boat.

Summit head torch - Does what I needed

The only downside is that it is not rechargeable.

    Headlight

I have just repaired (hinges etc.) some cupboards at my sons house. These are in a dark corner with difficult access so the headlamp proved to be ideal.

Good for general illumination, disappointing for specific illumination

As a cyclist I store my 3 bicycles on a balcony open to the outdoor environment through a sill high safety wire reinforced glass panelled steel framed barrier fenestration. The 3.5 x 1.25m floor area is unlit with 2 bikes stored on their side stands placing the handlebars in opposite directions with the 3rd bike stored vertically on a bike nook, floor stand. The Summit Prolite head torch provides excellent handsfree general illumination to move the bikes. However its detailed illumination (tightening Allen key insert bolts) is too diffuse and insufficient. Requiring the need to hold a small torch in the mouth to prevent shadows masking the Allen key insert orifice thrown by the diffuse illuminating head torch, which rather defeats the objective of a hands free, head torch and is disappointing in its limited illumination for general as opposed to detailed illumination.
