The Brother MFC J497DW takes IJT branded Brother LC3211 and LC3213 cartridges, each set has 4 ink colours; Black, Cyan, Magenta and yellow. Our branded recycled inkjets are available in both the standard capacity LC3211 and high capacity LC3213 inks. Each LC3211 cartridge can print up to 200 pages whereas the higher capacity LC3213 cartridges can each print up to 400 pages. This is based on 5% coverage on an A4 page.

This printer supports a range of connectivity options including wireless, Wi-Fi Direct and USB, as well as compatibility with select mobile printing and cloud services like Google Cloud Print and Brother iPrint.

Our thoughts on Design

The Brother MFCJ497 DW is a compact light weight machine with dimensions of just 477 x 249 x 457 mm (WxDxH) and a weight of 8.3kg. On the front of the machine is a control panel with a 4.5cm LCD screen and set of navigation buttons which can be used to control current and queued print jobs. As well as the 100 sheet capacity standard paper tray there is a 20 sheet automatic document feature which can be used when scanning multipage documents.

Main Printer Advantages

As well as the 4 functions (print, scan, copy, fax) you are getting with the MFC J497DW there are also plenty of extra features which are surprising additions for a printer of this budget and size. The automatic duplex printing and ADF are the most attractive of these features; both allow the printer to function with limited user input; the MFC J497DW also supports borderless printing.

Main Printer Disadvantages

There are a few down-sides to the MFC-J497DW, most notable is the printing speeds which are quite slow at just 12 ppm in standard mono printing mode and 6ipm in colour, and these are slower still when printing double sided. The duty cycle for this printer is also quite low and it functions best when printing between 100 and 200 pages a month, unsuitable for most offices.

Running costs - Are the inks good value for money?

Unfortunately the Brother MFC J497 does have high running costs; this is the case with a lot of the budget entry-level printers where price of the consumables make up for the low initial cost. You can reduce these costs though by using our recycled IJT branded cartridges which are available at much lower price compared to original Brother Inks, they still produce the same quality prints and are also available in high capacities.
