You can colour print, scan & copy with the Canon 2550S printer. It's fairly basic in that is only offers single sided printing, but at this level of budget, I suppose it's to be expected. The canon has fairly decent dpi at 4800 x 600. It's good for printing both colour and mono documents and with reliable printer inks, is affordable to run. Perfect for home or student use if you need something that isnt bulky nor fuss and just want a simple inkjet printer that's cheap to run. 8 images per minute (ipm) in black and 5 images per minute (ipm) in colour should do most un-demanding users.

What printer cartridges does the Canon Pixma MG2550S use?

The Canon Pixma MG 2550S uses the PG545 and CL546 ink cartridges. The MG2550S will accept our branded IJT Direct recycled inks that come in black PG545 and tri colour CLI545 and also the high capacity 545XL & 546XL. The standard capacity PG-545 & CL-546 can print up to 180 pages per cartridge and the high capacity PG-545XL & CL-546XL can print 400 pages from black and 300 pages from the tri colour cartridge. These numbers are based on 5% coverage of an A4 page.

Our in-house printer experts here at IJT Direct think the Canon 2550 has been produced for basic home users. It has no LCD display, so the user can operate the printer using the buttons on the top.

Our thoughts on Design:

The MG2550S has a standard flatbed scanner making it easier to fit into smaller spaces with a compact footprint measuring just 426 x 306 x 145 mm. It has a 60 sheet rear loading tray and is available in black. This printer doesn’t have WIFI so can only be connected via a USB printer cable so not ideally suited to multiple users.

Main Printer Advantages:

The Pixma MG 2550S is simple to use, just plug into your computer and the drivers should start downloading straight away for you. If not simply download the drivers using the supplied driver CD or download directly from Canon. You can do manual duplex (double sided) printing which is great for saving money on paper supplies.

Main Printer Disadvantages

The Pixma MG2550 printer can limit the user due to its paper tray only taking 60 sheets of plain paper at a time. Its duplex function is manual so would slow down the printing process as you would need to turn the page; it also doesn’t have an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) which could limit the user as well.

Running costs - Are the inks good value for money?

Our printer experts think the Canon Pixma MG 2550 could have cheaper running costs because it uses a 2 ink system rather than 4. They tend to be more expensive to run, especially with the tri colour cartridge as if you run out of a colour you need to replace the whole cartridge.
