The HP Officejet 3830 takes IJT Direct branded HP 302 cartridges. These are available in standard 302 and high capacity 302Xl for both black and tri-colour cartridges. The standard Black can print up to 190 pages and each tri-colour up to 165 pages; in contrast the high capacity black can print up to 480 pages and the tri-colour up to 330 pages. The HP 3830 is a great all in one printer targeted towards home and student use with print, scan, copy and fax functions making it the perfect entry-level printer according to our IJT printer experts. With a maximum duty cycle of 1000 pages a month, this printer can easily carry out any task you could ask of a home multifunction printer. As well as the standard USB and wireless connectivity the Officejet 3830 supports a range of mobile device printing applications including HP Smart App and Apple AirPrint.  

The Officejet 3830 comes in black with a 5.5cm LCD mono touch screen control panel for managing print jobs. The paper handling consists of a 60 sheet capacity input tray, 25 sheet output tray and a 35 sheet ADF to use for multi-page scanning jobs. Despite the incorporated automatic document feeder (ADF), the HP 3830 is a compact printer with dimensions of 450 x 364 x 224 mm (WxDxH) without the input and output trays extended and a weight of 5.76kg.

For a printer with as many features as the 3830 it is all housed in a compact case with small footprint making it the perfect fit for any home office. The size and the price of the OfficeJet 3830 are very impressive when taking into account the integrated ADF feature which despite being an essential feature for those looking to do lots of long scanning usually makes machines bulky. Another attractive feature of the HP OfficeJet 3830 is the duplex printing option which reduces paper consumption.

The OfficeJet 3830 does have some disappointing features; firstly the maximum paper capacity of the input tray is just 60 sheets of A4 paper and the output tray just 25 so any print jobs longer than these will need to have the output tray emptied or input tray refilled. The print speeds are quite slow compared to other inkjets at just 8 mono prints per minute and 6 colour ppm. Despite the presence of the duplex feature it is only a manual duplexer so you have to flip each sheet of paper to achieve the double sided effect unlike an automatic duplexer.

Here at IJT the printer experts think the HP OfficeJet 3830 could have cheaper running costs. The increased expense is mainly down to the 2-ink system which relies on a black and tri-colour cartridge. The tri-colour ink is very wasteful as you have to replace the whole cartridge when any one of the colours runs out, you will find this wastes a lot of money especially if using original HP inks. You can keep these costs down by using our recycled IJT branded inkjet cartridges which are available at low prices whilst still being excellent quality.
