What printer cartridges does the Hewlett Packard Officejet 3831 use?

The HP OfficeJet 3831 takes IJT branded HP 302 standard and 302XL high capacity ink cartridges. There are 2 cartridges in the set; black and tri-colour, our IJT branded inks are available in the high capacity. Standard 302 black inks can print up to 190 pages per cartridge and the tri-colour up to 165 pages where the high capacity 302XL black can print up to 480 pages and the tri-colour 330 pages. This is based on 5% coverage of an A4 page.

The Office Jet 3831 can print resolutions up to 4800 x 1200dpi and copy at up 600 x 300dpi with a maximum of 20 copies.

Our thoughts on Design

This HP Printer comes in Black and has a 5.5cm LCD touch screen for managing the current and queued print jobs. The OfficeJet 3831 has 1 paper tray which can hold a maximum of 60 sheets of standard A4 paper or 20 sheets of photo paper as well as a 35 sheet ADF/ flatbed CIS scanner which allows quick and hands-free scanning on multipage documents.

Main Printer Advantages

For an affordable all-in-one printer, the HP Office Jet 3831 has many additional features, firstly the Automatic Document Feeder allows this home printer to complete long scanning tasks with little to no attention required. The OfficeJet 3831 is both Windows and Mac compatible with plenty of connectivity options; the standard USB and wireless modes as well as Apple AirPrint compatibility. 

Main Printer Disadvantages

The main drawback of the OfficeJet 3831 is the printing speeds; these are quite slow at just 8 mono prints per minute and 6 colour ppm. Additionally this printer cannot automatically duplex print, each page has to be turned in order to achieve a double sided print out. The paper capacity of the HP 3831 is also limiting at just 60 pages of a4 paper so it would regularly need to be refilled. Despite being a 4-in-One printer, the OfficeJet 3831 can only perform 1 of these functions at a time, you cannot multi-task jobs for example scanning and printing.

Running costs - Are the inks good value for money?

Overall we think the HP OfficeJet 3831 could have better running costs thanks to its 2 ink system. The tri-colour cartridge means that you have to replace the whole ink when any one of the colours runs out; this can end up costing a lot especially if you use original HP cartridges.
