What printer ink does the HP Colour LaserJet Pro M254dwuse?

The HP M254ww A4 colour laser printer uses a 4 toner system. This includes a black and 3 individual colours, cyan, magenta and yellow. These are available in a standard capacity 203A and high capacity 203X. The standard 203A produce 1400 copies on black and 1300 on each of the colours whereas the high cap 203X produces 3,200 on the black and 2,500 prints from each of the individual colours. These numbers are based on 5% coverage of an A4 page.

Our experts here at IJT believe the colour laser HP M254dw printer is ideal for those small offices and home office environments. Excellent text and graphics reproduction as well as a small footprint and wireless connectivity, the laser printer also supports mobile printing for added convenience.

Our thoughts on Design

The HP M254dw has a netural white plastic body that sits less than 30cm high and less than 40cm wide so can easily but installed on a desk or table. The 2.7 inch screen is rather oddly placed but actually is the only sensible place to put it. It could be that little bit larger though to help navigate the printer settings and features. There is no scanner bed of any sort but there is a decent sized 250 sheet input tray.

Main Printer Advantages

The HP Color LaserJet Pro M254 dw produces sharp and details prints, especially for text and graphics with a reasonable high print resolution, especially for a laser printer. Rather surprisingly the M254dw will also churn out 21 pages per minute of both mono and colour prints. The size of the paper tray is also a big bonus as it can hold half a ream of paper which is especially beneficial for larger print jobs. The multitude of connectivity options including USB, network LAN and wireless only make this HP printer more desirable.

Main Printer Disadvantages

With it being a business spec printer the HP M254 is hindered somewhat by the lack of an automatic document feeder and even a flatbed scanner. Obviously there is no issue if this is used a standalone but there is no copying option at all.

Running costs - Are the inks good value for money?

Our printer experts see the HP M254dw as having very middle of the road running costs. It isn’t wildly expensive but equally it isn’t especially cheap either. Buying individual original HP toner cartridges won’t hugely increase the cost of running your printer but you can bring costs down considerably by purchasing high quality IJT Direct branded toners at the best prices.
