Our Expert review of the Apple iPad Mini 2 Tablet

How it’s currently spec’d:

The refurbished Apple iPad Mini 2^nd generation has the same 7.9” sized screen as the 1^st Gen iPad Mini but that is about where the similarities stop. The Mini 2 has a sharper and just better looking Retina Display with a resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels. The Mini 2 also has more RAM, 1GB instead of 512MB. Storage is set at 32GB. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity for accessing the internet and connecting to wireless devices. Apple iOS support to 12.5.6.

Where we think it excels:

The smaller cousin of 9.7” and larger Apple iPads, the Mini 2 is far better than the 1^st Gen despite it being the same size. The design is sleek and can easily be used in one hand, even more so given the very latest Mini, the 6^th Gen, has a larger 8.3” display. The Retina display is a marked improvement against the 1^st Gen. Best of all, put it in a rugged/tough case suitable for kids and you’ve got a bargain priced tablet that still usable in 2023.

What we think its drawbacks are:

It’s hard to ignore that most smartphones aren’t all that smaller than the iPad Mini 2. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra for example has a 6.9” screen and you can do an awful lot more on a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra than an iPad Mini 2. There are also no biometric security features just password/code options. The camera performance is also disappointing even compared to budget handsets available today.

What we think of the design:

There isn’t a freshness about the Mini 2 though the same came be said about so many different generations. However, we’ve said this so many times before, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! A great screen and top notch build quality, even for a tablet that has been around the block a few times now.

Great for anyone looking for a low cost tablet option from one of the main names in tablet computing.
