Printing from your HP printer over a Wi-Fi connection offers plenty of advances including the flexibility to print from anywhere within range of your wireless network, it reduces the need for more cables and there is the ability to easily connect multiple devices.

Let’s take a deeper dive together and truly understand how to connect to a HP wireless printer, discover some troubleshooting tips and discuss the benefits of wireless printing.

Pre-Setup Printer Requirements for Wireless Connection

First of all let’s make sure the printer is prepped and ready to go. I.e. if it’s brand new it will need unboxing and all the protective coverings have been removed,  ink cartridges installed and paper loaded. If your printer is already at this stage then you’ll need to ensure the printer is within range of your wireless network and that you have the network password, which is generally found on the Wi-Fi router.

Ensure your printer is within range of Wi-Fi

Make sure you have situated your printer within range of the network. The closer to the router the printer is the more stable your Wi-Fi connection will be, which is important for a fast and hiccup free set up. Most Wi-Fi signals have a range of 150 feet using a 2.4Ghz frequency and 5Ghz is around 50 feet, which is more than enough range for most households and a lot of business premises. Consider where your Wi-Fi router is located; it may not be in the best location regardless of where your printer is, especially if the signal has obstacles such as walls in the way.

Make sure you correctly know your Wi-Fi password

This is an obvious one but we all know how annoying it is having to to-and-fro between printer and router, having to try and remember said password then inevitably entering a digit or character in wrong and having to start all over again. Make a note of your Wi-Fi password before you start, it will save a ton of time.

Basic HP Wireless Printer Setup (Step By Step)

Step 1 Enter set up mode

Using your printers LCD touchscreen or navigation buttons, chose the wireless setup options. These are most likely to be within the settings or network settings menu. Most HP printers have a Wi-Fi set up wizard that will walk you through the process set by step.

Step 2 HP Smart app

Install the HP Smart app on your computer or from your mobile device app store. Create your free account then proceed to printer setup. The app will take you through the complete process step by step.

Step 3 Restore Wi-Fi setup mode (if required)

If sets 1 and 2 haven’t worked for you then restore Wi-Fi setup mode by selecting the Setup or Wireless icon. Select Network setup or Settings then select Restore Network settings. Select Yes if a confirmation prompt displays. Wait roughly 60 seconds for the wireless light on the front of the printer to blink blue. Within two hours return to the app or software to go through the set up process.

Connecting to Wi-Fi Using HP Auto Wireless Connect

HP Auto Wireless Connect offers a straightforward method for setting up wireless printing on new HP printers by automatically configuring network settings during the setup phase. This user-friendly feature operates directly from your printer's display. To use it, choose "Network (Ethernet/Wireless)" when prompted, followed by "Yes, send my wireless settings to the printer (recommended)." This simple step enables easy Wi-Fi connection for compatible HP printers.

However, not all printers or networks may be compatible with HP Auto Wireless Connect. In such instances, alternative setup options are available, or you can opt to manually configure during installation. For those using older printer models, a few additional steps may be necessary to ensure a seamless Wi-Fi connection.

Using the HP Wireless Setup Wizard

The HP Wireless Setup Wizard simplifies connecting your HP printer to a wireless network. Accessible on HP printers with a touchscreen or LCD display, it guides users through a few easy steps. To start, power on your printer and access the wireless or network settings from the control panel. Select the Wireless Setup Wizard, choose your Wi-Fi network from the list, enter the password, and follow the prompts to finish setup. This efficient tool enables secure wireless printing from various devices without needing complex configurations.

Troubleshooting Common Connection Issues

Printer is not being recognised by the network

Generally speaking this happens when your printer isn’t within range of your Wi-Fi router or something is disrupting the reach of your network. Most of the time resetting your wireless network or restarting the printer itself will resolve this issue.

Printer not connecting to Wi-Fi

Similar to the issue above, make sure your printer is within range of the network. Next check that the network is working correctly and the printer is correctly configured to your wireless network. If you or someone else has recently changed a network setting or even the network password this will cause the printer to disconnect to the network and you’ll need to enter the printer settings to resolve this.

Slow printing speed over Wi-Fi

High-resolution settings or duplex printing can slow down printing speeds. For faster printing, reduce print quality in the settings or disable duplex printing if not needed.

How to troubleshoot with HP Smart

This is very simple and straightforward. Open the HP Smart app or HP Smart and then open Diagnose and Fix. Click Start and wait for the results to roll in. You’ll be given instructions to fix any issues/s and if those don’t work there are additional resources or HP Customer Support.

Advantages of Wireless Printing

Wireless printing offers so many different advantages users, regardless of their own printing requirements.

First of all fewer wires means less clutter and great flexibility and mobility. Without the need for a physical cable connection from each device workspaces will be less cluttered. This is especially beneficial when space is at a premium. No wires also mean wireless printers can receive jobs from multiple connected devices. Those devices are restricted on their location as long as they are within the Wi-Fi networks range.

Most modern wireless printers aren’t restricted to use with a computer, compatibility extends far wider to include smartphones and tablets. Perfect for enhancing productivity and convenience.

Set up and connectivity is also generally very straightforward. HP printers have software built-in to the printer and the HP Smart app. The simplicity rids those technical challenges presented by a traditional wired set up.

Connecting to an HP wireless printer opens up a world of printing possibilities, marrying the convenience of modern technology with the reliability and quality that HP is known for. By embracing wireless printing, you can enjoy a more flexible, efficient, and productive printing experience that meets the demands of today's digital age.
