Our Specialist view of the Dell Latitude E5550 laptop
The Spec:
The refurbished Dell E5550 laptop has the following spec: a Full High Def 15.6” WLED screen with 1920 x 1080 resolution and a 5th generation Intel Core i5 dual core processor. This laptop also has 4GB RAM installed with the capacity to accept up to 16GB, a 256GB 2.5” Solid State Drive (SSD), a webcam for meetings/conferencing/distance learning or just catching up with friends and family, a full sized keyboard with separate number pad, ports including USB 3.0, HDMI, VGA and more with Windows 10 Professional 64Bit preinstalled.
The Good Bits:
Where everything in the world of laptops is continually looking to go smaller and thinner, the Dell Latitude E5550 is refreshingly different. Its 15.6” screen provides a clear picture that allows more to be visible on screen without compromising on quality. This larger screen also allows for a full sized keyboard plus a separate number pad, which is a godsend when creating spreadsheets. You’d be forgiven for thinking a 15.6” laptop would be a sizeable and weighty bit of kit, but that isn’t the case with this E5550. It’s not even 2.5 cm thick when the lid is closed and weighs less than 2.2kg.
The Not So Good Bits:
The ‘Not So Good Bits’ are few are far between. We can take it or leave it on the lack of an optical drive. It could do with a bit extra RAM from the get go but upgrading is relatively trouble free with the RAM slots being accessed from the underside the laptop. This leads us on to the other complaint, the battery. It can’t be slid out by simply moving a catch; it’s accessed by removing the same base plate on the underside of the laptop.
The Design:
You don’t get the impression this is a big laptop, despite having a 15.6” screen. It’s also packed full of ports including 3 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, VGA, Ethernet, headset/mic combo jack and a security lock slot. The case is plastic unlike it’s cousins in the Dell Latitude 7000 range but it doesn’t feel cheap and nasty, it feels very much a quality investment.
Suitability:
A business line of laptops when Dell first launched the E5550, it’s still very much in that bracket of business/entrepreneurial use.
