Our Expert review of the Humax HDR-2000T 500GB Freeview HD Recorder

What would you use it for?

Humax produce some excellent freeview recorders and have done so again here with the HDR-2000T. What would you use it for we hear you ask? On the face of it you can record your favourite terrestrial TV programs, but this Humax freeview recorder is more than that. Using a network connection you can watch on demand TV from BBC iPlayer for example.

What’s good about it?

Its compact design won’t draw any attention, which is exactly what you want. It also looks great with a brushed silver finish and some nice illumination on the front when on and recording. There are also twin HD tuners as standard so you can watch one TV show whilst recording something at the same time. Mentioning recording, the HDR-2000T has a massive 500GB hard drive so you really don’t need to worry about missing your favourite show again, up to 300 hours worth of standard def viewing.

Are there any drawbacks?

The main one, no built-in WiFi. More or less every household has WiFi but there isn’t always easy access to the router or a separate network point. Humax did make a USB WiFi adapter which can be purchased separately. There is a way storage can become an issue, mainly if you only record the HD channels, in which case you’ll be able to record up to 125 hour rather than 300.

Are there alternative products available?

Humax is considered to be the leader in freeview recorders with plenty of history and pedigree in making excellent products so yes there are lots of other options but not many we would consider as equal to the Humax when build quality and reliability is considered.

    Good service

The recorder arrived well packed. On installation it was evident that there was a fault on the hard disk. Contacting IJT they promised me a replacement which arrived the next day. and works well. I am quite satisfied.

    Quick all round.

Delivered 19 hours after ordering. Soon unpacked and checked contents. Read the quick set-up booklet and got busy. The only problem I had was with my Hitachi TV, I had never used the HDMI input and it needed switching on. Quickly went through initial setup, recorded something and played it back. I then set my usual programmes to record, poured a beer and read the full instruction book. Different menus to my previous recorder but straight forward enough. A good product and agood bargain.
