The Spec:
The Lenovo ThinkPad T540p specs are as follows: a 15.6”, yes a whole 15.6 inch Full High Definition screen with a 4th generation Intel Core i7 dual core processor, 8GB DDR3 RAM with a maximum accepted of 16GB. All the usual bells and whistles including a webcam, DVD-ROM optical drive, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a card reader and USB 3.0 plus a large 500GB hard drive for your data and Windows 10 Pro. No onboard graphics on this Lenovo though, you get treated to an Nvidia GeForce GT 730M discrete card for extra performance.
The Good Bits:
Sturdy and dependable is what springs to mind when we look at the T540p. But rather pleasingly Lenovo give you more than just a dependable laptop. For starters it’s packed full of spec. Something you don’t see very often in a business spec laptop is a discrete graphics card. Not essential but a nice touch by Lenovo. It’s also so nice to use a keyboard with a separate number pad, especially if you are used to using one or you have upgraded from a smaller laptop. Finally, the ThinkPad T540p has a plethora of connectivity options; so many that we honestly couldn’t think what it might be missing that we use quite often.
The Not So Good Bits:
Well built, yes. Reliable, yes. Military spec tested, yes. Those things are big ticks in the pros column for the T540p but at what cost? Unfortunately it’s made the laptop a little on the weighty proportionally large side. This is the sacrifice made for a laptop we still think is awesome but is a few years old now.
The Design:
We have covered this in several places above. The Lenovo T540p is a compromise of performance over portability. A powerful laptop that probably wouldn’t win any awards for aesthetics but that leads to the question, what do you value more as the end user? If that answer is portability and aesthetics then we would suggest looking at a laptop with a smaller screen.
Suitability:
Lenovo designed and produced the T540p as per of their ‘Professional’ range, which is still something we would wholeheartedly agree with.
