Our Expert review of the RING 14W Portable Solar Panel Charger
What would you use it for?
Charging a smartphone or tablet while camping or hiking or at a festival, generally where there is limited or no access to mains electricity.
What’s good about it?
Lots of things are real positives for this solar charger. It folds up to a fraction of the size so it’s easier to take around with you. Imagine having a massive solar charger to pack as well as having all the other essentials with you! The solar panels are also splash proof so absolutely perfect weather isn’t necessary. One of the most important features is the 2 USB ports. Though not that there is 2 but more because one of the USBs is 1A and the other is 2.1A. This means the RING solar charger can cope with both smartphones and tablets and even more importantly, it can charge 2 devices at once. Most importantly of all, using the RING charger won’t cost you a penny!
Are there any drawbacks?
While the panels are splash proof, the USB ports certainly aren’t so care needs to be taken when the weather is misbehaving. RING also advertise a device charging time of 1.5 to 3 hours in full sun. This is certainly a more than expectable charging time but the catch is full sun is required. We found more often than not with a bit of cloud cover and 2 devices connected, charge time was considerably longer.
Are there alternative products available?
There are other products to choose from and for varying different budgets that make excellent smartphone and tablet accessories.
