If you’re in the market for a new printer, you’ve come to the right place! Whether you need a reliable home printer for occasional use or a robust workhorse for your business, HP offers something for everyone. In this blog I’ve rounded up the top 10 HP printers for home and office use to help you find the perfect match. Choosing a HP printer has never been easier!

To make things simple, I’ve listed these printers in order of price, starting with the most budget-friendly options at the top.

Interestingly, price often aligns with the printer’s monthly print volume, so if you’re after a home printer for light use, you’ll find it early on. If you’re shopping for a small business or office, scroll down a bit to explore models designed for higher workloads.

By the end, you’ll have a clear idea of which HP printer fits your needs and budget. Let’s get into it!

1. HP DeskJet 2723e

hp-deskjet-2723e.jpg

Ideal for: Light, infrequent printers who just want the convenience of a home printer.

  • Price Range: £45 - £66.99

  • Consumables: HP 305 Ink

  • Monthly Recommended Print Volume: 50 to 100 pages

  • Print Speed: 7.5 ppm (B&W), 5.5 ppm (Colour)

  • Input Tray Capacity: 60 sheets

  • Faxing Capability: No

  • Duplex Printing: Manual

  • Automatic Document Feeder: No

The HP DeskJet 2723e is a budget-friendly all-in-one inkjet printer designed for light, infrequent use, making it an awesome choice for those who value the convenience of a home printer without needing advanced features.

Priced between £45 and £66.99, this printer is well-suited for households with modest printing needs, offering a monthly recommended print volume of 100 pages. It delivers print speeds of up to 7.5 ppm, which isn’t bad if you’re not regularly printing multi-page documents.

This model only supports flatbed scanning

Unlike the HP Envy series and some other DeskJet models, which feature an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) for streamlined scanning and copying, the DeskJet 2723e is limited to flatbed scanning only. This means users must manually scan or copy individual pages, which may not be ideal for multi-page tasks.

But in my opinion, the DeskJet is well made and stands out for its simplicity and affordability, making it a great entry-level option for basic printing needs. While it lacks faxing capability and automatic duplexing, its manual duplexing feature still allows for two-sided printing if you ever need it.

The DeskJet series is known for its straightforward functionality, and the 2723e is no exception. For users seeking a reliable, no-frills printer for occasional tasks, this model offers solid value.

2. HP DeskJet 4120e

hp-deskjet-4120e-new.jpg

Ideal for: Ideal for students and individual home users with light printing needs but like the idea of an ADF and slightly higher printing speeds compared to the 2723e.

  • Price Range: £49 - £66.99

  • Consumables: HP 305 Ink

  • Monthly Recommended Print Volume: 50 to 100 pages

  • Print Speed: 8.5 ppm (B&W), 5.5 ppm (Colour)

  • Input Tray Capacity: 60 sheets

  • Faxing Capability: Yes

  • Duplex Printing: Manual

  • Automatic Document Feeder: Yes

The HP DeskJet 4120e is an affordable and versatile all-in-one printer, ideal for students and home users with light printing needs who value added convenience and functionality. Like the previous DeskJet model, you get a monthly volume of 100 pages and a 60 sheet tray capacity.

But while priced similarly to the HP DeskJet 2723e, the 4120e offers slightly faster print speeds at 8.5 ppm for black-and-white and 5.5 ppm for colour, along with a 35-page Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). The DeskJet 4120e includes faxing capability, but in my experience most people looking for a home printer will almost never need this.

For those who need more than the basics but want to stick to a budget, the DeskJet 4120e strikes a great balance between affordability and functionality. However, if you are looking for automatic duplex printing, you’ll need to consider stepping up to the envy.

3. HP Envy 6020e

hp-envy-6020e.jpg

Ideal for: Families and share houses that need a printer to cater to multiple users for less than 100 quid.

  • Price Range: £47.99 - £70

  • Consumables: HP 305 Ink

  • Monthly Recommended Print Volume: 100 to 400 pages

  • Print Speed: 10 ppm (B&W), 7 ppm (Colour)

  • Input Tray Capacity: 100 sheets

  • Faxing Capability: No

  • Duplex Printing: Automatic

  • Automatic Document Feeder: No

The HP Envy 6020e is a great pick for home users who print more frequently and want something a bit faster and more efficient than the HP DeskJet 4120e. In my opinion, the Envy is one of the best Inkjet printers on the market. Let me explain.

While the DeskJet is perfect for light, occasional use, the Envy 6020e steps up with a monthly recommended print volume of 100 to 400 pages, compared to the DeskJet’s 50 to 100. It’s also noticeably quicker, with print speeds of 10 ppm for black-and-white and 7 ppm for colour, so you’ll get through larger print jobs a bit quicker.

One of the biggest bonuses in the Envy is automatic Duplex printing. In my experience, it’s a feature that customers don’t think they really need but end up loving it. Imagine standing in front of your printer to manually flip over a 20 page contract. What a hassle!

This model doesn’t have an ADF

But I have to mention, the Envy 6020e doesn’t have an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) or faxing capability, so if scanning and copying multi-page documents is a priority, the DeskJet might still have the edge.

For those who want an easy-to-use printer with more than 100 page monthly volume, automatic duplex printing and faster speeds, the Envy 6020e is my pick through and through.

4. HP Envy Pro 6420

hp-envy-pro-6420.jpg

Ideal for: Those that love the Envy 6020e but also want an automatic document feeder (ADF).

  • Price Range: £55 - £86.92

  • Consumables: HP 305 Ink

  • Monthly Recommended Print Volume: 100 to 400 pages

  • Print Speed: 10 ppm (B&W), 7 ppm (Colour)

  • Input Tray Capacity: 100 sheets

  • Faxing Capability: No

  • Duplex Printing: Automatic

  • Automatic Document Feeder: Yes

The HP Envy Pro 6420 is very similar to the Envy 6020e that I just discussed, so keep all that in mind. The reason you’ll pay a little bit more for the Pro version is because you’re getting an ADF.  So, if you’re planning on scanning a lot of multi-page documents, the upgrade is totally worth it.

5. HP Envy Inspire 7220e

hp-envy-inspire-7220e-new.jpg

Ideal for: Moderate printers who also like to print photos at home.

  • Price Range: £60 - £79.98

  • Consumables: HP 303 Ink

  • Monthly Recommended Print Volume: 100 to 400 pages

  • Print Speed: 10 ppm (B&W), 7 ppm (Colour)

  • Input Tray Capacity: 125 sheets

  • Faxing Capability: No

  • Duplex Printing: Automatic

  • Automatic Document Feeder: No

Again, the HP Envy Inspire 7220e is similar to the base Envy model, the 6020e, but you pay a little bit more for select advanced features. For the Inspire, it’s all about photo printing. With special print settings like borderless printing and photo paper compatibility, it allows you to print high quality photos that go beyond the standard Envy.

From my tests, the photo prints are very high quality for such a budget printer. The colours are vibrant and true and there’s no smudging even on high-gloss paper.

In terms of document printing, even though you don’t have an ADF, you will still get Duplex printing which is handy. And of course, you’ll enjoy the speed and capacity of the standard Envy model too. It’s a great option for home photo printing that doesn’t require you to splurge big time on a photo-only printer.

6. HP LaserJet M209d

hp-laserjet-m209d.jpg

Ideal for: Teams of up to 5 users requiring efficient, high-volume black-and-white printing.

  • Price Range: £100 - £150

  • Consumables: HP 135 Toner

  • Monthly Recommended Print Volume: 200 to 2,000 pages

  • Print Speed: 29 ppm (B&W), N/A (Colour)

  • Input Tray Capacity: 150 sheets

  • Faxing Capability: No

  • Duplex Printing: Automatic

  • Automatic Document Feeder: No

The LaserJet M209d is a budget option for those who simply need a workhorse printer without any added features. I say budget because for most printers with an 800+ monthly print volume, you can expect to pay more than £200 or £300. Also, laser printers are generally much pricier than inkjet ones, so it is also quite low cost when compared to other lasers.

To find out more about the difference between a laser printer and an inkjet, have a read of the blog posts where I dive deep into how to choose.

Why is the M209d so cheap then?

By leaving out colour printing, faxing, an ADF and including just a small tray capacity, HP can offer this robust printer at a lower cost than other LaserJet models. Another way that they have cut costs here is that, at just 600 x 600 dpi, the print resolution is half that of every other printer on this list.

In my experience, for simple document printing this lower print resolution won’t be an issue. For images and graphics, you will start to notice a difference but honestly it may be worth the trade-off for the money saved. It all depends on what kind of business you are.

The LaserJet M209d is a no-frills, budget-friendly laser printer designed for businesses who need a reliable workhorse for high-volume black-and-white document printing. It sacrifices some extra features to keep it low cost, but it still offers a reliable alternative to more expensive LaserJet models.

7. HP Smart Tank 5105

hp-smart-tank-5105.jpg

Ideal for: Small office team of up to 3 users or home offices

  • Price Range: £170 - £200

  • Consumables: HP 32 Ink Bottles

  • Monthly Recommended Print Volume: 400 to 800 pages

  • Print Speed: 11 ppm (B&W), 5 ppm (Colour)

  • Input Tray Capacity: 150 sheets

  • Faxing Capability: No

  • Duplex Printing: Manual

  • Automatic Document Feeder: No

The HP Smart Tank 5105 is a standout all-in-one inkjet printer with a unique, eco-friendly design that features refillable ink tanks. Priced between £170 and £200, it’s recommended for teams of up to 3 people, handling a monthly recommended print volume of 400 to 800 pages.

It is slightly faster than the Envy, with print speeds of 11 ppm for black-and-white and 5 ppm for colour. In my opinion, this is still pretty slow if you’re regularly printing documents over 10 or 15 pages, so be realistic about your team’s patience levels!

Its 150-sheet input tray means less time refilling paper, but keep in mind it doesn’t include an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) or faxing capabilities.

Pros and cons of the refillable tanks

What makes this printer really special is its high-capacity ink tanks, which are designed for low running costs. Similar to the Epson EcoTank, when you purchase the printer, it comes with 3 years worth of ink, which is pretty impressive compared to cartridge systems which are replaced every few months. Even a high capacity ink cartridge can’t compete with that!

But, I always like to remind customers that the refillable tank means that you aren’t ever replacing the printheads, which can lead to print quality issues. Disposable cartridges have the printhead attached to the cartridge, so you’ll be replacing it every time you do an ink refill.

But with refillable tanks, it is near impossible to replace the printheads without taking the whole printer apart. Essentially, you may need to replace the whole printer if the printhead clogs. So, it’s a good idea to run maintenance regularly and use the printer regularly, even just for a test page, to keep everything working smoothly.

8. HP OfficeJet Pro 7740

hp-officejet-pro-7740.jpg

Ideal for: Office teams of up to 5 users that utilise A3 printing and scanning.

  • Price Range: £195 - £250

  • Consumables: HP 953 Ink

  • Monthly Recommended Print Volume: 250 to 1,500 pages

  • Print Speed: 22 ppm (B&W), 18 ppm (Colour)

  • Input Tray Capacity: 500 sheets

  • Faxing Capability: Yes

  • Duplex Printing: Automatic

  • Automatic Document Feeder: Yes

The HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is a powerhouse printer designed for small office teams of up to five users, and it’s a big step up from the Envy and Smart Tank models if you’re looking for serious performance and versatility. Priced between £195 and £250, it’s built for heavier workloads with a recommended monthly print volume of 250 to 1,500 pages.

It is almost double as fast as the Envy, with print speeds of 22 ppm for black-and-white and 18 ppm for colour. Plus, the 500-sheet input tray means you’ll spend less time refilling paper, and the automatic duplex printing makes double-sided jobs effortless.

What sets the 7740 apart is its ability to handle printing on A3 paper, which is awesome for teams that need to create large-format documents like posters or presentations. It also includes a 35-page Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) and even faxing capability, making it a true all-in-one workhorse.

Compared to the Envy models, which are better for light to moderate use, the 7740 is all about meeting the needs of a small team in a professional setting. If you’re looking for something that can handle larger jobs and more versatility, I recommend the 7740.

9. HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e

hp-officejet-pro-9015e.jpg-new.jpg

Ideal for: Office teams of up to 5 users that prioritise high volume printing.

  • Price Range: £180 - £280

  • Consumables: HP 963 Ink

  • Monthly Recommended Print Volume: 200 to 2,000 pages

  • Print Speed: 22 ppm (B&W), 18 ppm (Colour)

  • Input Tray Capacity: 250 sheets

  • Faxing Capability: Yes

  • Duplex Printing: Automatic

  • Automatic Document Feeder: Yes

Okay, so the HP OfficeJet Pro 9015e is very similar to the 7740 with a few key exceptions. With a slightly higher price range compared to the 7740, you get a more robust model with 2,000 monthly page volume compared to just 1500. But, keep in mind, you miss out on the A3 size support and have a smaller tray capacity at just 250 sheets.

Aside from that, the print speed, resolution and features are the same between the 9015e and the 7740. So, I’d recommend the 9015e to teams that won’t get much use out of the A3 printing/scanning feature, and prefer the flexibility of more monthly prints.

10. HP Colour LaserJet Pro MFP 4302dw

hp-color-laserjet-pro-mfp-4302dw.jpg

Ideal for: Teams of up to 10 people who don’t require high-quality colour printing.

  • Price Range: £329 - £400

  • Consumables: HP 220A/X Toner

  • Monthly Recommended Print Volume: 740 to 4,000 pages

  • Print Speed: 33 ppm (B&W), 33 ppm (Colour)

  • Input Tray Capacity: 250 sheets with an optional 550-sheet accessory tray available.

  • Faxing Capability: No

  • Duplex Printing: Automatic

  • Automatic Document Feeder: Yes

The LaserJet is the most robust printer on this list, and is built to handle consistently high printing levels in a professional environment. As a laser printer, it has a higher upfront cost compared to the other inkjets on the list, but keep in mind the long term cost of cartridges will be lower.

Another feature of laser printers is that they are significantly faster (33ppm!) but therefore sacrifice some level of quality. For a lot of businesses this isn’t an issue, but in my opinion this printer isn’t suitable for a marketing firm or any office that needs to print high quality, colour-heavy graphics.

I’ll also note that there is a monochrome version (4002dw) available at a lower cost, which might be more cost effective if your company doesn’t need a colour printer at all. Alternatively, you may opt to use the LaserJet Pro for monochrome document printing and invest in a high-quality colour printer for select printing jobs.

Final Thoughts
